This year a few of the sunflower seeds that were dropped on the ground by our migratory winter birds have sprouted. Some of the flowers are opening, it will be fun to document their growth, and we hope to end up with our own home-grown sunflower seeds!
The plants are really tall, I am 5'7" and the flower is at my eye level.
This one started opening last evening.
This morning a second one began to open.
Early morning sunlight will help it to open.
Each joint of the plant has the beginning of a flower.
To think that this all started with a tiny seed, and that the intelligence in that seed will be in the seeds that eventually develop from this tiny beginning.
The one that began to open last night is now fully open.
The designs and patterns in nature are awe inspiring.
The early morning sun striking the flower creates such deep, rich colors.
It is possible to see where the seeds will develop. As the petals fall off and the center florets dry up the seed kernels will begin to swell in the disks.
